Hi,
I need to find a rehabber in the clearwater area that has a good place to release a squirrel. I have to catch her first. She has been getting into the buildings here, and there is poison outside that has killed her mother, and several other squirrels. This little girl is very special to me, so I'm picky about where to let her go. Lots of trees, away from busy streets, and no cat problem. She is about 2 1/2 months old, but lost without her mother. Her mother lived inside the building with me for over 4 years. Her name was Ruby, Henry and Hazel's mom. I keep taking the poison out, but sometimes I miss the times Orkin comes. I think that they are using a different kind of poison that targets squirrels. I've never seena squirrel pass up a hand full of nut for poison before.

Thanks for any help,

Sparky

What part of Florida are you in??? Are there any parks or conservation areas that she can be released maybe away from your building??

This is beyond words to describe. As I just PM'd to Sparky, but I want everyone to know:

It is illegal in Florida to set out poison baits where wildlife can get to it, and it's illegal to kill squirrels by means of poison in any case.

Let's get the b@stards.

I live in Pinellas Park. I work in the Largo, Clearwater area. Her mother never made nests in a tree because she was raised like a pet then let go, so I doubt this little one will either.

For four years people here would try to pick up Ruby, and they fed her, and pet her behind the ears. In all this time, she was never aggressive. She was the most gental squirrel I have ever known, including the 3 I have at home.

Hi sparky.
I'm sorry to hear about what happened to Ruby and leaving the little one motherless!:( Is a 2 1/2 month old baby old enough to be released in a new location without soft release?

Hi Golden Eyes,

no I don't think 2 and a half months is old enough for a release. I think they should be kept till they are close to 6 months, because they are fully developed then, and have a better chance of defending a territory. That's important now, as food is really scarce, and a lot of trees have been cut down for developement in our area.

Witt1189, I haven't reported it yet. I have been so miserable from bad health, and then losing such a cloe friend as Ruby, that I'm just kind of incoherent now. I keep flipping back and forth from anger to heart ache.
I loved Ruby so much, I just can't put the feelings to words. When I feel better though, I'm going to try to. She deserves that much.

Thanks everyone. I just hope I can catch her. When I do, I hope I have someone that I can justm take her too, so there's not too much swapping back and forth for her.

Thanks for all the kind words Gamma. I have been calling her Baby, because she's Ruby's last baby. I thought you might like to know that.

Sparky, I've sent some PM's. Hopefully you'll hear from someone soon.....:grouphug

Even if it's someone in another part of Florida, maybe you could meet halfway....
