Default Guidance on building play cage

A few weeks ago my dog brought me a baby squirrel the first morning in our new house.

The mother did not retrieve it and so we ended up taking care of it. I believe it was about 3 weeks old. He is now 6 weeks old and looking pretty healthy once we got him on the Fox Valley formula.

He is starting to get a lot more active and inquisitive. He’s also trying to chew our fingernails. So I started building a cage for him that will hopefully see him through to release.

It is an old dog crate for my 70 lb Malinois.
I got some untreated pine scrap wood from Home Depot and trimmed out the bottom for him to chew.

The branches are old, fallen branches from a Southern Oak. He likes playing in cardboard can boxes, so I will put a few of those in, some fleeces, and he likes sleeping in winter hats.

Is there anything I should add or take away? Also, I am adding hardware cloth, 1/2 inch, tomorrow to keep him from slipping in between the bars.
