Hi all,
I have two squirrels that are 5 1/2 to 6 weeks old and they are teeny.
Very healthy just really small, these are the kids I thought were red squirrels.
Is there such a thing as dwarf squirrels?

You know kcassidy I raised two squirrels a while back Matti and Chick, they were sibs...and I got them from a tree cutter only hours from the nest. They were only 50 grams....and they grew up to be pretty average size squirrels living wild and free I thought they were Reds too, because they were so small. Actually, I got my squirrels all confused and thought they were Foxers NOW I know the difference people must have thought I was crazy here

The Peace of Wild Things
BY WENDELL BERRY
When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.
LOL!
These two have the exact same story as yours. I got them on 3/16 and I think they were hours old, based on a few things.
So I won't worry about it
You know I hate to say it but I think those that are raised by us from tiny pinkies -- less than a week old -- do not often grow up to be large or even average-sized squirrels. The youngest two I ever rehabbed (they looked like kidney beans with umbilical cords; could not have been more than 2 days old) were very petite juveniles and even at release time they appeared to be 8-9 weeks old instead of 16. I've noticed it over and over; the babies I have that are big linebackers by release time almost always came in older than 2 weeks. Mamma's milk in those early days must be incredibly important to their overall development.
