Default oh no, just saw a squirrel in my screen porch

I went out to give it a nut, and although it ran from me, I got a good look at its face, and pretty sure it has pox around its left eye! I saw raised bumps around the eye, and it was actually like the eye was bothering it. Ugh. Never seen pox around here. So, of course, terrified for all my babies, esp. Bean! What can I do, anything? I do not know who this squirrel is, but it is one that has been around, as it knew to come into the deck. I only saw around the eye, hoping it was an injury, but sure looked like the beginnings of pox to me....

Thank you, Nancy. I have never even seen a squirrel with pox around here, so this is very disturbing to me. I want to know what I can do to try to help this one, but to try to protect the others (I already make sure there is no standing water, and we cut down the brush around the yard.)

Well it is a virus, which means that a healthy immune system can throw it off, but a compromised animal is at risk. So the best thing you can do is boost the immune systems of the wilds. That is one reason why I feed rat block instead of nuts - not only is it cheaper, I know they are getting some solid nutrition.

Mrs. Skul, who has dealt with this, recommends adding echinacea to their water supply - apparently GNC's brand of echinacea is actually pleasant tasting and encourages them to drink rather than discouraging them.

You can't do much about the transmission without wiping out mosquitos but healthy, robust animals without a lot of stress are a lot less likely to contract it.

will look into the echinecea for th water. I put out block, but no one will touch it (even my releases after they are released!!) Course, I do feed nuts, so I guess I can't blame them. Thank you , Crittermom. I have not seen this squirrel today, but as I said, with it being in the screen porch, had to be a regular.
