Oh my goodness!! Bless her little heart , and THANKS to both of you, for taking care of her! The infestation alone must have been driving her crazy. Hopefully she can relax and get some rest now so she can start healing. Best of luck!! Linda

Makes me itchy just looking at him!
Did he fuss much when you washed him up or is he pretty down right now?

What kind of microscope do you use? do you use it for fecal slides as well?
This poor little fellow must be pretty low to have gotten taken advantage of like this. Did you use anything topically for the lice etc?

I'd like to know because I have picked up some nasty looking beasties and am curious to know what people use to clean them up AND to clean up the carriers and such after contact.

I used Advantage and Revolution for the paasites you can see and the ones yu can't that ae under the skin.

I don't know which brand of microscope I have. It is one that I can hook up my camera to to take pics.

I have never used it for fecal slides. I don't know what to look for. Does anybody have a pic of what would look for in that? It would be nice to know.

She was NOT happy about the bath but it was neccesary with all that crust and bugs.

She laid in my lap with the towel afterwards real nice. She's had a bad day. She let me scritch her. SHe loved that. As long as she couldn't see me she was ok. I had to keep a little flap of the towel over her face while taking care of her.

Oh Poor little Crispy...the old out of site out of mind trick.
I have some pix of coccidia, tapeworm jaw and oocytes. The NWRA site has numerous books and CD/ROMS (Wildlife Under the Microscope by Stuart L. Porter, VMD...Looks especially good to me) I have to have and don't yet

You would have to do a float to find fecal parasites. Here is a really good tutorial. (member here found it)

Here are some pix of Sq fecal float slides a friend had done of some squirrels I was caring for.

WOW!, poor guy. Only one way to say this.......MANGE SUCKS! Especially when your whole crew gets it! The bad part is waiting for the hair to grow back and keeping them warm.
You can love them, raise them and let them go.....after that, they are in mother nature's care...........Welcome to the nut house!

Home to Leroy & Lisa ... ...some just know they have it good I guess!

It spreads like wildfire if you don't practice proper hygiene
There are at least 10 Foxers and 5-7 Grays at the Willymill with it. Some were clipped.
I was out those 2 weeks when my kids had Mono
    Ever see a naked squirrel?
A little weird but they have a very impressive physique.
The naked tails look weird curled up over their back with a few little hairs.

I don't feel right taking pix of the poor things

Mr. Tilty lost all of his hair at one point. HE had bad mange in the begining. Nothing like good old squirrel porn.

I know mange can spread easily. I take alll the precautions that I can.

    Some were clipped???

YES surgically clipped leaving fur only on the face and feet. I could see the edges around the 'cuff' line and neck. The tails are also mostly bare. All I can figure is that it was a severe case that came in with some open sores although most looks very clean by now. Maybe I'm making an assumption?
They are pink as a baby's bottom!
I have to inquire about the clipping part.
As I said before, I was out for 2 weeks when this happened.
All animals were treated with Ivermectin by injection.
    They look pretty good too
I am shadowing the vet end of the month so I will have to ask.

Yeah, that Ivermectin works real fast. I used tat on Tilty. He stopped itching IMEDIATELY! I don't have any of that anymore. I used Advantage an Revolution on this one. The rehabber I volunteered for gave me it for Lumpy but she gave me a lot. Way more than needed for just him.

I checked her today to clean her up a little more. There is a lot of crust. I am finding tons of dead bugs on her lice fleas and mites. I found one lice on the towl that was alive but that was te only one. None on her were alive. I am posting some pics of one of her "friends" in the area that I found her. I think they might have it too but in much earlier stages. What do you all think? Mange or moult? Look at the shoulders. The others are always chasing ths one away from food so they might have got it if they tackled her?

looks like early mange to me, as I compare her to the 2-3 mangy ones I had here (didn't get to help them because they just disappeared ;-(). I think, it is a typical pattern that looks like a vest, and it's hard to see from the pic, but it looks like there is smth behind her ears...
if it is mange, then it is just the very beginning and might be confused with molt (or, molt might be confused with early mange)... , but looks like mange to me. Maybe, that's the reason the other squirrels were chasing her away, they, probably, know about their own illnesses and keep the infected away?... just guessing

It's definitely molt. Look at the definition and wooliness that breaks to slick. There is also an injury and maybe some mange.
If they were in direct contact rolling around they would get it. They may even get it from being on the same branch the sick one was resting on provided any mites were deposited.
The little one you have is run down because of injury. He can't fight the nasties off. Healthy squirrels will change nests make new ones when the old ones get buggy and groom themselves and each other fastidiously. An injured animal won't expend energy on that activity plus he's probably in a good deal of pain.

As far as squirrels chasing away the sick, think they do it because the sick are weaker. It is all about competition forfood for them. They all have certain status in their territories. The sick and injurer ar the lowest in status. They are easily chased away because they cannot defend themselves.

Now you will see why she is so cranky. I would be too if my skin felt like this.

But no matter how pissed off she gets there is always time for a nut. I think all squirrels are shameless when it comes to this.

    Look's better already.
Look's more trusting too. I'm sure he's feeling safer than he did when he was wild.
Is he able to keep up his body temp?
How's that leg look now that you have a better view of it?
