Hello Gang,

I was up late and caught these flyers at the feeder, so here is a picture or two.

Those guys are BIG Bob. Is that the normal size for a flyer up there or are they just big squirrels?

Squerly,

They are larger in general than our little Red Squirrels at times. The full grown ones at least. I don't know how much different in size they are compared to ones in your region. I don't know if I've told this story or not but I'll tell it again. Sometimes when walking through the woods here, you will find a tree just loaded with these mushrooms sitting up in the branches. They are placed there by the flyers for drying and storage for winter. There is a symbiotic relationship between the shrooms, squirrels and spruce trees. The spores that grow the shrooms as they are growing wrap around the roots of the spruce trees, giving off more moisture than they collect which in turn helps the spruce tree in grow. The spores are only spread by the squirrels as they collect them and place then in places to dry. Interesting but useless information for those who need to know. :Phone2

Bob, very interesting info and I feel that anything that teaches us about nature and how it works is useless.
