View Full Version : Re: UK Grey squirrel laws.
Y'know...? I'm almost beginning to live slightly in hope now :thumbsup
But WOW!! All that paperwork!!! :thinking
First of all... I need a good black pen... and about a month to sift through all that lot!
By the time I've done chewing the pen to an inky black stubb... I should be able to fill all that lot in......... :rotfl
And then to add to that list: badgers and bats.........................
which means MORE paperwork!! :ohthedrama
But certainly, thats a step-up from the old draconian 'kill 'em all' thing we've been seeing... so yeah, about time there was some positivity seen to be put in action and for once, I think I like it :D

Yes, I agree!:wott
Thankfully things are starting to change for the better, but there's still a long way to go!:shakehead
If we keep pushing and spreading the WORD, we might be able to get them to revise the old laws!!! Making life easier for the squirrels and us!:thumbsup
:thankyou
Jules. :Love_Icon
Just being slightly OT.. there's a 'Reds Vs Greys' feature on tonights 'One Show'...
Got the digibox set for recording it :D

Too late I've just seen it!:frustratedx
That was not a discussion...what happened to the facts!
I wanted evidence, not some big fat slob of a man telling me he likes squirrel pie!:gun2
This kind of talk increases problems and people will believe what they here! AGGHHHH!
Did you email them, cos I am. I will give them the facts and how detrimental this so called discussion will be to the grey...why are so many people ignorant!
:shakehead
This is basically what I emailed them:
Man is responsible for the decline in Red squirrels. Years ago men were paid to kill the Reds and bring back their tails as proof. They supposedly did this because of the damage and disease that they spread. This caused their near extinction. Next to hit the Reds was a disease that killed them. This is carried by grey squirrels too, and they also died, but the greys managed to evolve and therefore became resistant to this disease. Had the Reds been given a chance at that time to evolve, they too would have gained a resistance. Man also chopped down all the Reds natural habitat, (pine forest), so they could make their lovely pine furniture! Greys on the other hand are more adaptable, so manage to live just about anywhere. How can anyone blame the Grey squirrel for ruining the lives of the Reds. Greys are native by birth, but condemned by origin!
Might I also add that the laws on Grey squirrels is changing with regards to release.
DEFRA have given http://www.naturalengland.org.uk/ the responsibility of allowing licences for the release of the Grey, after rehabilitation, back into their own area.
It would be nice to see some true facts mentioned on your show about this subject. The media is responsible for so much propaganda against the grey squirrel and people believe it, Please put the record straight!

Hi Juha!
The reds do enjoy being amongst several types of tree, Spruce being one of them, but the majority originally came from the pine forests in the UK. These are usually found in the north areas, such as Scotland. Over the centuries the Reds have stayed within the northerly regions as the variety of trees differ in the more southern parts of Britain, which is why there are more Grey squirrels the further south you go.
Of course there are a very few exceptions to this, but on the whole Reds remain in the north, Greys in the south!
