Everyone else on here who's a flying squirrel fancier, tell us about your flying squirrel(s) and your experiences with them! Like if you rehab them of keep them as pets!

Flying squirrels love to play all kind of games with you! Which are usually very unique and special in their own way! My first flying squirrel Mima died not too long ago and it broke my heart. She was really sweet and alot of fun. Now I have another flying squirrel which was a suprise for my birthday! His name is Jasper! He's bonding to me very well and loves to sleep in my shirt while I go about my day. When he wakes up at night our favorite game is finger wrestling! Sometimes he stands (just for a second) on his hind legs and kind of swats at my fingers! lol it's really cute! He also LOVES to chew on them, which can be very painful! Since he's only 6 weeks old, I'm hoping as time goes by we'll invent some other (preferably less painful) games! And I'll be sure to keep you guys updated on all his adventures!

Ha, that's fun. We need pictures of Jasper.

I don't have a flyer anymore. I did for many years but he died almost a year ago. When he was here we played a lot of different games. One of his favorites (and mine too) was for me to stand about 5' back from the foot of my bed. Chipper (my squirrel) would come running and jump (sort of fly) from the bed to my open hands. I would then lightly toss him back onto the middle of the bed. He would glide to a nice landing, turn on a dime and run back to me to do it again. This would go on until one of us got tired of the game. Usually me.

Note: Make sure the ceiling fan is OFF! I never had any close calls but I remember thinking how disastrous a misguided fling might end up.

Welcome Country Boy, glad you joined. Always love hearing about another flyer family. We had a flyer, Chipper for 13 years. Best pet we ever had, still miss him to this day, lost him about a year ago. We would generate games with him in his younger years, just tossing him on the bed and holding out your hands so he could run and jump back into your hands was great fun for him. Also gave him a chance to learn the jumping/gliding routine since we got him at a very early age and didn't have a mom to help guide him. I know from the board alot of people give them stuffed animals so you might give it a try.

Hello, I'm new to the board and I do love these little guys. I had a grey squirrel for over two years that I found as a baby and hand raised until she (sadly) pased away. Abour a month later myson brought home an adult flying squirrel from his high school that some mean boys had caught and was torchureing,(sp).
I tried to save him, but after 2 days, I guess he had been through too much.
Anyways, I am now the proud mama of a little boy "Charley", who was given to me by a lady at a vetnarian's office who knew I loved them. He was six weeks old when I got him, and now he is 9 weeks and going strong.

i got my first flyer when he was 3yrs old, a man at the petshop was having a baby and wasnt sure how the squirrel would react to it. having being raised by a male he bonded instantly to me. His name was squirt, my wife decided she wanted a female, so we managed to find one..learned all about weaning and teaching them to fly. We had them in seperate cages until mamma bird (affectionatly name after her first litter), decide to move in with Squirt. Sure enough not so long after she became pregnant. (nothing is funnier than seeing a pregnant flying squirrel try to glide like she did when she wasnt pregnant. She had two, a male and a female, i was talked into selling the little male,(he died about two months later due to dehydration) and kept the female(baby bird). We lost mama bird, about two years later and it broke my wifes heart, Squirt lived to be about 10 or 11 when we lost him.. i felt like i lost my best friend! i could do anything with him, take him outside, into stores and he would never leave my shirt or pocket and if he did he always came right back to me. i wasnt (still havent) been able to find a local breeder but was able to get another male through a pet save project. his name is Skyler, im hoping they will breed this season will have to wait and see. i have so many wonderful stories about my flyers i know i will always have at least one running around my house no matter what. my life wouldnt be complete without them!

Welcome Stryder glad to have another flyer fan. My husband and I also had a southern flyer, Chipper, we lost him about a year ago, he was 13. You are right, it is like loosing your best friend. We also had a female, Bonnie, thought he would love the company, didn't really care much for her except certain times of the year if you get my drift. Unfortunately she developed female problems we think after being pregnant and losing the baby, she was 4. Again another broken heart. WE have not gotten another one yet but hope to in the near future. There's nothing like a flyer but you definitely better be willing to play at 2 in the morning!! If you have pics we would love to see them.
