I wanted to update the progress of Pip in his treatment for MBD. This is a crucial period for him in his treatment plan. His thread, "Dwarf Hamster Needs Help" was in "Non-life Threatening". I'm sorry, but I don't know how to link. When we saw his vet on April 23, his bone growth was excellent, as per x-ray. Vet then reduced his daily calcium intake to 200mg/day from 225mg. every 3 hrs, through April 30. Pip had no negative reaction and so, yesterday, the vet had me take his daily intake of calcium down to 175mg every 4 hrs. This is what makes this period critical because we have to see if his blood level will be sustained at a lower dose, but especially with less frequency. If it can't be sustained, this may trigger a relapse but this must be done to bring down his calcium intake. Please pray for Pip. Thank you.

Pip went thru Sat & Sun without a setback. His new schedule of 175mg calcium intake/day at a lesser frequency of every 4 hrs is what could trigger problems. His blood level must be able to adjust to this. So far, no twitches & his appetite is good. He's not lethargic. :thumbsup

Pip has finished 4 full days on reduced calcium at less frequent intervals. He has had no twitching or other symptoms. So far, his blood level is adjusting to the change:) His cage paralysis has improved about 80%. Vet said this may be the extent of his recovery, but he's very active----tunnelling & shredding. He no longer has the lack of energy that has always been present. My prayer is that his blood level will hold & that our next vet app't on May 14, will show more bone growth.:thumbsup

Thanks pappy. Pip's comeback from MBD has been such a learning experience for me. It is such a terrible disease & tho, he is doing well, there is always the chnace of relapse. I hope that one day, MBD will be wiped out & no animal will have to be stricken by it.:wave123

Ol' Toshiba is hanging in there, I think because the room is cool. (AC is cranking at $5/hr :osnap) I will go to Staples today and get one of those cooling pads.

As for MBD....you know it almost never, ever EVER occurs in the wild. It's a disease that human beings cause animals to develop in their care..... So, to CURE MBD we need smart vets and researchers, but to PREVENT MBD from happening in the first place we just need to get the word out to people, over and over and over until they get it. :thumbsup

Pip has now begun his 2nd week on reduced calcium intake of 175mg/day every 4hrs, instead of 3hr. He has not had any setback. This is a critical time for him because we go back to vet next Fri. Hopefully, there will be more bone growth so vet can continue reducing both amount & frequency of calcium. Please pray for him. He has come a long way with his MBD.

Unfortunately, Pip had a series of twitches last night. I gave him the emergency 50mg calcium & they stopped. Looks like the reduced calcium & most probably the change in frequency to every 4 hrs, altered his blood level. I'm hoping this is not a permanent MBD setback.

Hi Heather & Solitaire :wave123

Yes, the vet had said a drop in blood levels due to change might cause some twitching but Pip is OK. Hopefully, that will continue until Fri, so there can be a further decrease in calcium intake. Thanks for thinking of us:)

Pip's blood level appears to have stabilized. There has been no recurrence of twitches. Wish I had a better understanding of what, with MBD, makes his blood calcium level suddenly go out of whack.

Katherine
05-12-2010, 05:08 AM
I called the vet last night to ask about Pip's twitches, followed by lethargic behavior. He said he was not surprised because th drop in frequency of calcium intake from every 3 hrs. to every 4hrs. had a definite effect on blood levels. This had to happen for adjustment to processing calcium. Fortunately the "emergency" calcium caused the twitches to stop & the lethargy tends to follow because that was a strain on his body. As long as he is eating & active, which he is....I shouldn't be too worried. This unfortunately is MBD. We will see vet Fri. I am praying for bone growth. This little guy has been thru too much.

Pip does have more energy today:) That's a great idea about a tissue box with tissue in it. You know, I just realized that he might have gotten upset yesterday because he saw me use my electric shredder & maybe he felt his shredding talents were no longer needed:rotfl

We are back from the vet. While I was expecting better results, the vet is pleased & I guess that's what matters. X-ray shows that the left hind leg is at 90% normal, up from 80% 3 weeks ago. That's only a 10% increase. Pip's right hind leg is up to 60% of normal size, up from 50% last time. That's also only 10% higher. Vet said that after a while, with MBD treatment, I cannot expect the same level of results. What's vital is that there is bone growth & no deterioration. Since there was an episode of tremors & lethargy, he wants to maintain same dose of 175mg calcium/day every 4hrs. If, after 2wks, there are no tremors, I can decrease to 150mg/day, still every 4 hrs. Vet said the adjustment of blood level to frequency of dosage is vital, so that's why the 4hr administration will remain for quite a while. We don't have to go back for 3 weeks--June 4. Pip's cage paralysis is just about gone. So, the young man has come a long way. He deserves it. He's been thru a lot. Vet said I should give Pip a party :dono
I want to again, thank all who have posted prayers for Pip. :wave123

Hi Bravo. No, Pip doesn't see the vet today. I was just giving a week's update because it's important that he's had no twitches. If that continues for 1 more week, I can reduce him to 150mg calcium/day every 4 hrs. Then, we see the vet for x.ray on June 4. So, these are crucial weeks for him with his MBD. So far, so good. Thank you so much for thinking of him:wave123

Pip has had an excellent report from the vet. His left hind leg is at 100% of the normal size:thumbsup His right is at 70% of normal bone density. The vet & I are so happy. There is no explanation for why the right hind leg lags behind the left but it doesn't matter. These results are better than I ever expected. Now, while, of course I was reminded that MBD can always relapse, I know that Pip has passed the worst of it. The vet wants me to reduce his daily calcium intake to 125mg/day every 5 hrs., instead of every 4 hrs. If no problems for 2 wks, then I take him down to 100mg/day but still at every 5 hrs. The decrease in frequency is still the most important factor, to see if his blood levels are maintained. We don't have to see the vet for 1 month:crazy

I want to thank all who have continued to pray for Pip. It means so much:thankyou

Kelly. You definitely have to start your business. The package came after we got back. As shown on the model above, it is absolutely adorable. Because Pip was left with a bit of a hunchback from the cage paralysis, it fits perfectly. The velcro snaps are fantastic. I admire your patience in doing something so small. Pip wouldn't let me put the glasses on him & I know that's because he's tired & stressed from the vet. By tomorrow, I will try them again. You are such a talented and wonderful woman.:bowdown

Katherine, I have tears in my eyes as I write this. Not just because I am so happy for this wonderful news (I am THRILLED) but also because of your love and dedication to this tiny little guy, one that many would have just said 'oh, I can just get another one' and not done the things you have done. You have a very special place in heaven, my friend. Angels are amoung us......

And Pip, our tiny little hero, you rest. You have worked so hard (with your mommy) and done so amazingly well. I could not be more proud of the both of you!

We need to get that boy a tiny little party hat now!!!! He sure has earned it!

I saw the news as soon as you got home and posted it. I AM SO PROUD OF PIP AND OF YOU FOR ALL OF THAT CARE. I just new it would be good news but that is really the best of news ever.:multi

I am so glad to hear the cape is not too big. I really thought it may be way to big because I do not have a wee one to use to size it. I should fix that and get a distant cousin of Pips.

I was in all kinds of meetings yesterday and could not respond to the good news but got it the minute it posted. Then I came home to work on the outdoor cage and stepped on the hose and my ankle went side ways and down I went. All is well except a sore ankle and a bruised ego. I don't know why ego would be bruised, I am such a clutz.:osnap

The wedding was great. The doggies were so sweet & well-behaved. The bride & groom were so happy to have them there. Do you remember Roberta Flack's song : "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face"? There should be more parents like you. Did you see my thread "Advice Needed For Mice". Mother bought 9-yr old daughter 2 siblings, 1 month old. Pip has been to the vet. His x-ray showed that not only is his left hind leg which was at 100% normal density but his right leg has also increased from 70% to 100%. In other words, his entire little body now has normal density:wahoo It is now a matter of reducing his daily calcium intake to a maintenance level. His vet believes that Pip will always need a calcium supplement because tho his MBD is now controlled, there is no cure & can always relapse. So, for the next 2 weeks, he will get 75mg/day calcium every 6 hrs & then, if no blood level problems, down to 50mg/day every 6 hrs. This is a great day for my litttle guy. Also, his cage paralysis is 99% gone.

What incredible news! What a long road it has been to this happy ending. I'm curious to hear more about Pip needing extra calcium for life, and how much, as I was not aware of that.

Tell the Pipster we're all so very proud of him and his devoted mommy. :Love_Icon Mad Max sends a couple of bites...:D
Hi 4S. Many thanks to you and "Mad Max". The vet feels that MBD is never cured, just controlled & that a relapse is always possible. He does not feel that enough calcium will come from food alone to maintain his blood level. How much , he will determine down the road as he reduces the daily intake. It will not be a lot, more of a supplement, as opposed to the large amounts he's been receiving. Going down to 75mg/day for 2 wks & then 50/day for another 2wks is just a reduction process, that must, of course, go slowly so as not to upset his body/blood levels. The ultimate dose will be only once/daily. The next month remains at every 6 hrs. There's still a long way to go. The most important factor is that the doses he's been getting have resulted in 100% normal bone density, so the winding down process must go slowly. :thumbsup

Many thanks to you, Heather, and your little ones for being so supportive of Sir Pip (he likes that title:) ) I have told him that you will post a new picture of Solitaire and he cannot wait. Now, with normal bone density, he can work hard at body building:

Thank you, so much. It's been a long road for Pip. MBD is a horrible illness and I am so happy his little bones have returned to normal density.

Thank you, Mary. Pip has come a long, long way.

I just read and posted about your heartbreaking loss of Nibbles and Wiggles. I know how upset you and Brianna are. The babies were not meant to be here, long, but they moved on feeling love and caring from you:grouphug

RIP...Angels Nibbles and Wiggles

Well am I happy to see this news:thumbsup

I had no doubt he would be fantastic at his check up. Does this mean he can run on a wheel now? Is there things he can do now that he has checked out so well?

I am so proud of my little Pipster. Hugs from Aunt Kelly:wott

Thank you, Kelly. Pip and I are very happy:) I asked the vet about a wheel and he feels that it may be too soon--said he wouldn't want to see any injury. So, Pip will keep himself occupied, tunnelling, shredding and most of all, staring a pics of Solitaire and Blueberry:multi

Katherine, ask your vet about using those balls they walk around in. They don't usually run in them, but it will give him a change of scenery. Blueberry has a blue one...lol and she loves her (at night, since she is not a 'morning fuzzy'...lol)

Thanks Mary. I will ask. Other than little cardboard "hide" boxes and his tunnels, Pip hasn't been allowed any toys. He can't read so he must be bored:dono

I don't think it should be an issue with your vet, they are different then wheels but will give him something new to do. They also have the satellite wheels, which are different then regular wheels, that may be safer for him, as well. Ask about them, too.

Hi Mary. I spoke to the vet. He said anything that does not have steps with spaces in between, like a ladder, on which he could fall between or get a leg caught would be fine. I'm thinking that the green wheel that Blueberry is in would be great. Agree? He said satellite wheels are fine but i don't know what they are. He has plenty of room.

Hi Katherine :wave123

It's fantastic that it is safe for Pip to use a wheel now - in the UK there is a product called a "flying saucer" wheel which is a disc set on a frame at a slight angle. They have proved very popular as animals can't trap tails or feet so these are safe for beasties from African Pygmy Dormice to hamsters of all species.

That is the 'wheel' I was talking about, Heather! lol I know Petco carries them, haven't seen them at Petsmart, though.

I am sure he will love having a wheel (solid floor). He has earned it!!!!! That is great the vet gave a thumbs up. I know Pip will be so happy!!!

I don't know if we have anything like that. I neglected to mention that Pip can only have toys within his cage. He is too fragile to be loose. When he first came to me, I learned to pick him up carefully and sit him on my lap. The vet never wanted him outside the cage and he never showed any desire to to.

Mary. Is this the green wheel that Blueberry is in? I am not too far from a Petco but I want to be sure I'll be getting the right one?
