I know the little flying squirrels in your world are a bit smaller but these came to the feeder tonight. Are they not beauties.

Oh it's beautiful and big much bigger than ours. Guess they need all that extra fur and body to keep warm in all that snow :D

Hope you are nice and warm.

they are beautiful.. I love their color.

Hey, do they often travel in pairs in the wild or did two just show up at the same time and decide they'd rather eat than compete?

Thanks Bob, that was a nice eye opener. This is the first time I've seen flyers at your place. Is it daytime or nighttime out there?

Mrs Jack, They travel in singles, pairs and little groups or family units I believe. I've seen as many as five in the same hanging feeder on some nights. :flash3

Squerly, it was night and I turned the light on when I heard them on the feeder to try and grab a picture. They don't like it when I do that and run away real quick most of the time. They are moving all the time, as I'm sure your well aware of.

Ghost,

They are not rare, and in fact there is a real special symbiotic relationship with the flyers and the spruce trees in this part of the world. They gather up a mushroom from all over the woods and place them the trees to dry, spreading the spoors of the mushroom. The mushroom grows around the roots of the spruce tree capturing more mositure that the tree uses too. So in turn helps spread the spruce trees. :multi

GREAT flyer pix. Please post a lot more - I have a pair that I still don't know for sure whether they are northern or southern. Since the size range of the two overlaps somewhat, and there are such color variations, I just can't make up my mind. It's hard to make a definate decision between two such similar animals when you have never seen one of them before - I have nothing to judge against!
