Pete, my second red-eared slider has died. He was so small and tried to fight off a respiratory infection. He started wheezing. I took him to the vet but he stopped breathing in my hand in the car. First Redford, now Pete. The vet said that these tiny red-eared sliders are bred in horrible conditions, sold at flea markets and then abandoned by those who bought them. He fought but just couldn't make it. This is so heartbreaking.
RIP little Pete.

oh Katherine I am so sorry! These poor babies come to you so compromised, thanks to the jerks who sell them and the jerks who vuy them. Any time they spend outside in a NYC winter is deadly....poor Pete was warm and safe when he passed, thanks to you. :grouphug:grouphug:grouphug:grouphug

Oh Katherine...this is just heartbreaking for you I know...
I know how personal you take these deaths...and you will always think there is something more that could have been done. But Katherine, when these babies are with you and they die, I know they would have died with anyone. I have never seen anyone turn their life upside down so much over the past few months as you have for all of these little critters. You are faithful with going to the vets, giving the meds, the food, the tank and the temperature, you name it, and you do it...There is no one Katherine that could have saved Pete...if not you.
He died in the most gentle loving hands he ever had around him...
RIP

I am so sorry Katherine. You did everything you could do. Sometimes they are just too sick and too little to save. RIP sweet Pete.

Leese little ones are so fragile. I'm sure you did all you were able.

Please don't beat yourself up over this. Baby turtles have a very high mortality rate and are particularly susceptible to upper respiratory infections. I'm still debating on whether I'll ever get another turtle because of this. If I do it's likely to be a tortoise and not a water turtle.
