Thursday I am getting a pair of Northern Flying Squirrel pups! They are captive bred and born, and tame. I've been wanting a pair of NFS for several years, and now it seems like Thursday will NEVER get here!! Remember how you felt on Christmas Eve night when you were six? Well, that's how I am right now:crazy

OK - here's an update. My NFS are coming from Nebraska, by way of Tennessee, and then (tomorrow!!!) to Texas. It has been a wild couple of weeks, to put it mildly!

A friend from NFSA has a pair of northerns, and I, of course, wanted a couple of the babies. But Nebraska is way too far for me to go. So I had pretty much given up on it. Then another NFSA member found out that she was going to go be able to go up from Tennessee and get her a pair, and would bring back a pair for me. Lance and I were gonna drive up to Tenn. to get them, although I was dreading the trip - sitting in a car is really rough on me due to arthritis and siatica. (But Hey, these were Northern Flying Squirrels, right? No pain, no gain!!!) My wonderful son-in-law, Keith, offered to go get them for me. So, plans were made, details finalized, and SIL took off this afternoon. YEA!!!! - right??? Wrong. About an hour later, SIL called - his truck had broken down! So Lace, our daughter, brought the kids over here, and she went up to pick him up. They came back, got our truck, and went back to tow his truck home. Got it back down here, Keith left our truck here, took our van and headed out again! So he's on his way to Memphis, where he will pick up the warm fuzzies at 11:30 tomorrow morning and head back home, in time to get some rest before he has to go to work Friday! Do I have a fantastic son-in-law or not???!!!

I'll bring ya'll up to date as soon as the babies get here - well, after they get here and I have a chance to play with them and start getting them really spoiled! And will post pictures as soon as I can. Meanwhile, we are all nervous wrecks down here, keeping our fingers crossed that nothing else goes wrong. Keith has also said that I am not allowed to get any more squirrels that are over a 5 hour drive from here! (I think I'll wait a few months before telling him that I have a few more northerns reserved in Ohio this spring.)

Anyhow, I'M STILL SO EXCITED!!!!

THEY'RE FINALLY HERE!!!

My wonderful son-in-law just got home, and the babies are BEAUTIFUL!! I haven't had time to play with them, but they're very sweet and quite tame, even though they aren't used to me yet. In less than two weeks, they have traveled from Nebraska to Tennessee and finally to Texas. They have got to be wondering just what in the world is going on!

More (with pix) later.

Sorry - you're gonna have to wait a while for the photos. I just found out that I am getting in at least seven, and possibly more, grey babies, so I've been busy getting the 'nursery' ready.

But my 'yankee flyers' are sweet as can be. They seem much calmer than the SFS, just as I have heard. They are 10 weeks old. They seem to be much greyer than the southerns, and a little larger. Libby (Liberty), the female, seems somewhat shyer than Link (Lincoln), the male, but both of them are fairly friendly. I have them in the living room right now - won't move them into the flyer room until they have been vet-checked - so I haven't been able to get them out to play. But Link will sit in my hand and be petted in the cage. It is going to be fascinating to learn the differences between the northerns and the southerns. I am anxious to get them in the same room to see how, and if, they interact. I know that they will share a feeder set up in the wild, and I know that the southern is much more aggressive than the northern.

I'll keep you updated on them all -SFS, NFS and grey babies. Got to go work on the nursery right now.
