Well, since Icarus is doing fine and dandy, I think it's about time to start making him a full-size cage. Right now he hangs out in my old hamster cage (one of the smaller ones) with a small branch inside, a little food bowl, and a small water bowl, and a sock hanging on the branch that he sleeps in.

Now, my husband is pretty good at building things. He's made a chicken pen, nesting boxes for chickens, and speaker boxes for cars, for example. We have hardware cloth handy. Someone also gave us an empty stump thing that they had for a squirrel, that the squirrel can go inside.

We live in a single-wide trailer, so space is an issue. Specifically, here are some things I need to know:
For a single flying squirrel, considering our available space, what dimensions would be best?
I read elsewhere that PVC pipe is good for the frames?
How to keep the hardware cloth cut edges from cutting the squirrel?
What kind of wheel would you reccomend?
Where is the best place to put the wheel?
How best to position some branches and leave room for gliding?
Will chewing on the cloth (like he does the bars of the hamster cage) hurt him any?

Any other advice you have would be much appreciated!

and when I was asking the same questions, someone sent me this link:

I finally bought hardware cloth and didn't cut it except on one side, but just "bent" it into a rectangle and secured to pvc with plastic 'ties'--the kind found in the 'electrical' department of any Home Depot and such.

What's a release cage? We're going to keep him in the house so we need a cage he can stay in when he's not running around the house. Something he will be able to glide in.

Do you mean the zip-tie things?

Have you built anything yet? I have the same space issue at our house and I am just not sure what is best for my baby flyer. I would love to see pictures of what you did for your baby.
